Amicus Curiae Program

Amicus Brief Submission

Amicus curiae means "friend of the court." Amicus Committee means "friend of OACTA members." Therefore, we want to encourage all OACTA members to utilize this significant benefit whenever you have a case pending before the Ohio Supreme Court.

OACTA is looking for the opportunity to make an impact on the important cases that you are litigating before the Ohio Supreme Court. The Amicus Committee has the resources to provide excellent authors for briefs on a wide array of topics. Issues relating to insurance coverage, premises liability, employment law, products liability, punitive damages, business torts, and corporate matters are just examples of the topics where you may need amicus support. The process of an amicus brief filing begins with a request that explains the issue and why OACTA support would be of benefit in the particular matter. The Board of Trustees considers this request, along with a recommendation from the committee chair. If the request is approved, an author for the brief is located if the requestor has not identified a "desired" author. Of course, the amicus brief is due at the same time as your merit brief. Therefore, if you are considering amicus support, please make your request as soon as possible once the Ohio Supreme Court has accepted jurisdiction.

This valuable benefit is provided at no additional cost to OACTA members. The author of the brief is compensated from the operating funds of OACTA which have been generated from member dues or other OACTA programs.

We encourage you to consider an amicus brief submission. Tell other lawyers about this benefit, as well as the other benefits of OACTA membership. Encourage others to become active and to join OACTA. Please direct your requests for consideration of having OACTA submit an amicus brief in support of your case to our Amicus Program Chair, Kurt D. Anderson at kanderson@fkwdlaw.com.
